Field Trips and Tours

The UI Pentacrest Museums (UIPM) offers tours of the Museum of Natural History and the Old Capitol Museum.  Many groups combine tours of both museums.  All tours require a reservation and are subject to availability. The UIPM requests you call to schedule yours at least one week in advance.  Be advised March – May availability fills quickly. Tours are offered on the hour beginning at 10:30 am.  The last tours begins at 3:30 pm.

There are three types of tours:

Group Tours (including camps & day cares)
Docent-led tours
focus  the restored and rejuvenated building. A national historic landmark located in the center of Iowa City, Old Capitol served as Iowa's first state capitol from 1846-1857 and the University of Iowa's founding building.  Groups larger than 15 will be split into two groups.  Groups larger than 30 should call Julia DeSpain (319.335.1508) to make special arrangements.

Tour Length: 45 minutes
Cost: $20 for groups of up to 15 people.  Museum admission is free.

School Tours (for K-12 Students) 

Tour Length: 45 minutes
Cost: As of July 2017 the UIPM continues to provide educational tours at no charge.  Please be aware that budget reductions experienced by the University of Iowa may cause this to change.  The Museums are currently seeking sponsorship of educational tours so that they may continue at no costs to the schools.

Self Guided Tours

Tour Length: self-determined
Cost: No charge. Museum admission is free
Reservations: Required
