Trek through the Museum of Natural History after dark for a fun evening of discovery! Discover animals in folklore and ones that used to be thought of as myths with interactive demonstrations, fun activities, and hands-on materials. Each child will receive an official MNH Miner Helmet with head lamp to keep, and the group will traverse the darkened mammal gallery as part of the evening’s activities. Museum staff, volunteers, and occasionally UI scientists and scholars lead each program. Parents drop off children at the beginning of the night and pick them up when the program is over.

Into Interstellar Space With Voyager 1

In a great technical feat, on August 25, 2012, after a flight time of 35 years, the Voyager 1 spacecraft crossed the heliopause into interstellar space. In this talk, Professor Donald Gurnett will describe the events leading up to this achievement and the latest observations of the interstellar medium.

Bring your toddler to enjoy a story and related activities at the Pentacrest Museums! Recommended for ages 2-4 years old. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program.

The April Read on the Rug program will feature the story "Quiet Loud" and takes place in the Supreme Court Chamber at the Old Capitol Museum.

We will also have pop-up recycling in Iowa Hall.

WWI Lecture Series - 1 of 3

Director of the Amana Heritage Society, Jon Childers will be discussing how anti-German sentiment was encountered during World War I. The Amana Society worked diligently to prove an unbroken line of pacifism, which ultimately failed, forcing over thirty Amana boys to serve in the military and cause area residents to send an angry mob to the Amanas with the intention of committing violence against the peaceful colonists.

Before the US entered the war, Hoover organized the Commission for Relief in   Belgium to feed 7 million in need. This was the largest food relief effort up to that time in history. When the US entered the war in 1917, Hoover was called by President Wilson to head the US Food Administration, a voluntary cooperative effort to conserve food for the war effort.
