At the area’s first-ever archives crawl, visitors can snoop in between the pages of historic diaries, read other people's mail, hold feathers and fossils, and peer into mysteries revealed by historic artifacts like swords and locks of hair kept in remembrance.

All events are free and open to the public!

In conjunction with our current exhibit Faces of Iowa Through the Early Lens, local historian and author Marybeth Slonneger will give a talk about the history of Iowa City's first prominent photographer Isaac Wetherby.

Slonneger holds degrees in art history, book arts and photography and is the author of Small But Ours, The Burg, Wetherby's Gallery, and Finials. She has done extensive research about Wetherby in the State Historical Society of Iowa's collection and continues to support the preservation of local history.

In conjunction with the Old Capitol Museum's current exhibit, Faces of Iowa through the Early Lens, we invite you to explore early Iowa City photography history by experimenting with cyanotypes! Cyanotypes create images by making blue lines & images on a whilte background.  We will take a closer look at Iowa City's first prominent photographer, Isaac Wetherby, and explore the exhibit. This workshop is made possible by State Historical Society of Iowa, Iowa City. Materials will be provided.
